GM COOLING ANODE
Description
Function and technical context
The TEN02001 cooling anode is a cathodic protection element installed within the cooling circuit of the General Motors (G.M.) marine engine, whose function is to electrochemically sacrifice itself to protect the internal metallic components - cylinder liners, heat exchangers, ducts and water plugs - against galvanic corrosion produced by the contact of salt or brackish water with surfaces of different alloys. Unlike shell anodes, this acts inside the engine block, where the constant circulation of coolant in contact with ferrous and non-ferrous metals generates potential differences that silently destroy the base metal. If the anode is depleted without being replaced, corrosion advances on high-cost and difficult-to-access parts, which can cause internal coolant leaks, loss of pressure in the system and engine overheating.
When to replace this part?
The most common symptoms of a depleted cooling anode are the appearance of greenish or whitish corrosion deposits in the water circuit, loss of coolant without a visible external leak and, in advanced cases, pitting in the cylinder liners or engine block that can be detected during a thorough inspection. The general recommendation from marine engine manufacturers is to inspect and replace cooling anodes at least once per boating season or every 200-300 hours of boating, whichever comes first; In areas of high salinity or waters with high conductivity, the replacement frequency must be increased. Replacing the TEN02001 anode preventively at each annual maintenance is the most economical measure to avoid major repairs to the block or heat exchanger.
