AIFO REFRIGERANT ANODE W/PLUG
Description
Function and technical context
The cooling anode with cap for Aifo engines is a cathodic protection element integrated into the engine water circuit, designed to be electrochemically sacrificed and protect the internal metal components of the block against galvanic corrosion. Being in direct contact with the coolant, it acts as an active barrier that attracts corrosion to itself, preserving the cylinder liners, the block and the fresh or salt water passages of the engine. Its capped design facilitates installation and tight sealing in the corresponding housing of the cooling circuit, preventing leaks and guaranteeing the electrical contact necessary for its protective function. If this component is used up or not replaced in time, the noble metals of the engine - aluminum alloys, brass or cast iron - are exposed to electrolytic action, which can lead to pitting, loss of sealing and irreversible structural damage to the block.
When to replace this part?
Cooling anodes should be inspected at the beginning and end of each nautical season, and replaced when they have lost more than 50% of their mass or present an irregular surface with deep pits, a sign that the zinc or protective alloy has been consumed. In engines that operate in waters with high electrical conductivity - busy ports, brackish waters or industrial areas - wear can be significantly faster, so a check every 150-200 hours of operation is recommended. Replacing the cooling anode preventively at each annual tune-up is the most economical measure to avoid internal damage to the engine block that is only detected when it already requires major repair.
