Function and technical context

Sacrificial anodes such as Onan's TEN02032 are part of the vessel's cathodic protection system, acting as an electrochemical shield against galvanic corrosion. Manufactured from an alloy with high electrochemical reactivity, they corrode in a controlled manner before the noble metals of the engine - casings, shafts, propellers or heat exchangers - do so, absorbing the galvanic couples that are generated when different metals coexist in a conductive medium such as salt water or fresh water with minerals. In stationary marine engines such as Onan generator sets, this component protects the metal surfaces of the block and the seawater cooling system that, without adequate protection, would suffer accelerated corrosion capable of causing leaks, loss of tightness and serious structural damage. Its correct operation is, therefore, a critical preventive maintenance element for the longevity of the engine.

When to replace this part?

The clearest sign that the TEN02032 anode needs replacement is a reduction in mass of more than 50%, indicating that it has already used up its active protection capacity; At that point, the metal surfaces of the motor are exposed to galvanic corrosion. It is recommended to inspect the anode during each seasonal maintenance - at least once a year - and replace it preventively at the beginning of each navigation campaign, especially if the boat operates in salty or brackish waters where the electrolyte aggressiveness is greater. Replacing the anode before it is completely depleted is the most economical and effective measure to avoid costly damage to metal engine components that requires machining or complete replacement.
