This anode is part of the Onan engine's cathodic protection system, acting as a sacrificial metal to protect the most valuable metal components - casings, shafts, cooling caps - from galvanic corrosion caused by contact with salt or brackish water. The operating principle is based on the difference in electrochemical potential: the anode, made of a higher reactivity alloy, oxidizes in a controlled manner before the base metal of the engine, preserving the structural integrity of critical parts. Without effective cathodic protection, galvanic corrosion can irreversibly compromise high-cost parts such as the engine casing or cooling ducts, becoming one of the most frequent causes of serious breakdowns in marine engines installed on vessels that navigate in waters with high electrical conductivity.
When to replace this part?
The clearest symptom that the anode has exhausted its useful life is the visible reduction in its mass: when wear exceeds 50% of the initial volume, the anode no longer offers sufficient protection and must be replaced immediately. It is recommended to inspect the anode at least once a season - before start-up and after removing the water - and replace it preventively even if it is not completely consumed if it presents cracks, fragmentation or loss of adhesion to the support. Changing the Onan TEN02031 anode preventively at each seasonal maintenance is the most economical measure to avoid corrosion damage that can lead to high-cost repairs or the complete replacement of engine components.
