ANODE NANNI MERCEDES
Description
Function and technical context
Sacrificial anodes are the key component of the cathodic protection system of marine engines: their mission is to absorb galvanic corrosion that would otherwise attack the most critical metal parts of the propeller, such as the casing, shaft or propeller. Manufactured for Mercedes-based Nanni engines, this anode acts as an active electrode that degrades in a controlled manner, protecting them from the destructive effects of salt, brackish or water with high mineral content. Without cathodic protection in good condition, the engine's aluminum and steel components are exposed to accelerated electrolysis that can render them unusable within a few seasons. Its correct installation is an essential part of the preventive maintenance of any boat with a Nanni Mercedes engine.
When to replace this part?
The most obvious sign that the anode has completed its cycle is the visible reduction in its mass: when it has lost approximately 50% of its initial volume, it should be replaced immediately, without waiting for it to disappear completely. It is recommended to inspect it at each beaching or at least once a season, and replace it preventively at the beginning of each new navigation season regardless of its apparent condition in especially aggressive waters. Renewing the anode before it is completely used up is the most economical measure to avoid serious and costly damage to the metal structure of the engine.
