LOMBARDINI SAILDRIVE ANODE
Description
Function and technical context
The Lombardini TEN01553 sacrificial anode for saildrive is part of the cathodic protection system of the propulsion unit, acting as a consumable element that preferably oxidizes to protect the metal parts of the saildrive against galvanic corrosion produced by the action of salt or brackish water. This component works directly on the saildrive type transmission, which, being in permanent contact with water, is especially vulnerable to electrochemical attack. Without adequate cathodic protection, the Lombardini saildrive casings, axles and alloy components would suffer accelerated corrosion that would compromise the structural integrity of the transmission, potentially leading to serious breakdowns and costly workshop interventions.
When to replace this part?
Sacrificial anodes should be inspected at least once a season, ideally at each docking of the sailboat for hull cleaning and maintenance. The unequivocal sign that the TEN01553 anode requires replacement is when it has lost approximately 50% of its mass: an excessively worn anode leaves the noble metals of the saildrive exposed, while a completely consumed one implies that corrosion may already be acting on structural parts. The professional recommendation is to replace it preventively every nautical season without waiting for it to be completely used up, since the cost of the anode is minimal compared to repairing the saildrive due to galvanic corrosion.
