Function and technical context

Sacrificial anodes are the electrochemical shield of any marine engine: they corrode in a controlled manner to protect the most valuable metal parts – aluminum casings, shafts, propellers and tail bodies – against galvanic corrosion caused by contact between dissimilar metals in a conductive medium such as salt or brackish water. This anode is designed specifically for Isotta Fraschini engines and equipment, integrating into the cathodic protection points provided by the manufacturer to ensure that degradation is concentrated on the anode and not on critical structural components. Without effective cathodic protection, corrosion silently advances on cast iron and light alloys, compromising the mechanical integrity of the block, transmission or cooling circuits with irreversible consequences and very high-cost repairs.

When to replace this part?

The clearest sign that the anode has completed its life cycle is a reduction in its mass of more than 50%: when the part appears visibly eroded, cracked or with a clearly reduced volume compared to the new one, its protective capacity is exhausted. The general recommendation in naval mechanics is to inspect the anodes at each beaching or at the beginning of each nautical season, and replace them whenever they show noticeable wear, without waiting for them to disappear completely.
