Description

Function and technical context

This cooling anode plug is integrated into the cooling circuit of the AIFO engine, acting as a cathodic protection element in the ducts and chambers through which the sea or brackish water used to cool the engine block circulates. Its function is to sacrifice itself electrochemically to protect the internal metal surfaces of the cooling system against galvanic corrosion, which is especially aggressive in marine environments. By deteriorating the anode before the walls of the block, the collectors or the heat exchangers, it prevents pitting, perforations and internal leaks that could cause a mixture of water with the lubricating oil or a loss of pressure in the cooling circuit. The failure of these internal surfaces is one of the most expensive repairs in marine propulsion engines, so the presence and condition of this anode plug is decisive for the longevity of the engine.

When to replace this part?

The clearest symptom that the cooling anode plug has exhausted its useful life is the visible reduction in its mass: when the anode has lost more than 50% of its volume, it no longer offers effective protection and must be replaced immediately. In engines that operate in salty or brackish waters, it is recommended to inspect these anodes at the beginning and end of each nautical season, replacing them at least once a year or sooner if wear is accelerated. Replacing this component preventively during seasonal maintenance is the most economical measure to avoid irreversible internal damage to the block and cooling circuit of the AIFO engine.
