Description

Function and technical context

Sacrificial anodes like TEN02071 are the key component of the cathodic protection system in Ford outboard engines and marine powertrains. Its function is to electrochemically sacrifice itself in place of metal engine parts—casings, propellers, shafts, and exhaust manifolds—that would otherwise suffer galvanic corrosion accelerated by contact with salt or brackish water. By acting as an active anode in the galvanic pair, it concentrates corrosive wear on itself, protecting the structural components of the propellant whose replacement would be considerably more expensive. The correct installation and periodic maintenance of this element is especially critical in marine environments, where the conductivity of seawater accelerates oxidation and electrolytic corrosion processes.

When to replace this part?

The main indicator that a sacrificial anode needs to be replaced is the visible reduction in its mass: when it has lost approximately half its volume or has a very irregular and eroded surface, it has ceased to offer effective protection. It is recommended to inspect and replace the anodes at least once per nautical season—or every time the boat is taken out of the water for maintenance—since in waters with high salinity or high galvanic currents, wear can be faster. Replacing the TEN02071 anode preventively before it is completely depleted is the most economical measure to avoid corrosion damage to metal engine parts that require high-cost repairs.
