Description

Function and technical context

Cathodic protection anodes are the first line of defense against galvanic corrosion in marine engines and propulsion systems. This sacrificial anode acts as an active electrode in the galvanic pair that is formed when different metals coexist in an electrolytic medium such as seawater or fresh water, attracting electrochemical corrosion to itself and thus preserving the noblest metallic components of the Cummins engine. It works directly integrated into the engine block or cooling circuits, areas especially exposed to the corrosive action of the marine environment. Without an anode in good condition, the galvanic attack progresses silently on cylinder heads, blocks, exchangers and metal casings, generating structural damage that requires costly or even irreversible repair.

When to replace this part?

The clearest sign that the anode has reached its useful life is the visible loss of mass: when the anode shows wear of more than 50% of its volume or appears fragmented, it must be replaced immediately, as it has stopped offering effective protection. The usual guideline for Cummins marine engines is to inspect the anodes at the beginning and end of each nautical season, replacing them at least once a year regardless of their external appearance if the boat operates in salt or brackish waters. Replacing the anode preventively during seasonal maintenance is the most economical measure to avoid serious breakdowns due to galvanic corrosion, the damage of which can multiply the cost of a simple annual inspection.
