Description

Function and technical context

Sacrificial anodes such as TEN02042 are the key element of the cathodic protection system in Cummins marine engines: they corrode in a controlled manner to protect the noblest metallic parts of the engine - casings, exchangers and aluminum or bronze bodies - against galvanic attack caused by immersion in salt, brackish or fresh water with a high mineral content. They act as an electrochemical barrier, attracting corrosion to themselves and preserving the structural integrity of the block components and cooling system. Without effective cathodic protection, galvanic corrosion can puncture parts of the seawater cooling circuit or degrade high-cost metal parts, causing serious breakdowns and out-of-season repairs.

When to replace this part?

The clearest symptom that the anode has exhausted its useful life is the visible reduction in its mass: when it has lost approximately 50% of its volume it should be replaced immediately, without waiting for it to disappear completely. The inspection and replacement of the sacrificial anodes must be carried out at least once per nautical season or coinciding with each beaching of the boat, since a consumed anode leaves the metal components of the engine completely exposed to electrolysis. Replacing the anode preventively is one of the most economical and effective maintenance actions to avoid irreversible damage to the Cummins engine and significantly extend its useful life.
