Description

Function and technical context

This zinc anode acts as a sacrificial element in the cathodic protection system of the Cummins marine engine, attracting electrolytic corrosion that would otherwise attack higher value metal components such as casings, cooling elbows, heat exchangers or block plugs. It works in direct contact with water—whether fresh, brackish or marine—interacting with refrigeration circuits and metal surfaces submerged or exposed to electrolytes. Without effective cathodic protection, galvanic corrosion advances silently and can cause perforations in the block, leaks in the cooling circuit or irreversible deterioration of internal aluminum or cast iron surfaces, leading to costly and unseasonable breakdowns.

When to replace this part?

Sacrificial anodes should be inspected at least once a season and replaced when they have lost approximately 50% of their mass, are cracked, partially detached, or show a completely irregular and corroded surface; A completely consumed anode leaves the metal components of the motor without any protection. The common practice among nautical maintenance professionals is to renew all engine anodes at each annual beaching, regardless of their apparent visual condition, given that the cost of the part is negligible compared to that of repairing a corroded block or exchanger. Replacing the anode preventatively at each seasonal maintenance is the most economical measure to ensure engine longevity in salt or brackish water environments.
