CATERPILLAR ANODE SERIES 2280
Description
Function and technical context
Sacrificial anodes are essential elements in the cathodic protection of marine engines and submerged metal components. This anode acts as a sacrificial metal, attracting galvanic corrosion that would otherwise attack critical Caterpillar engine or transmission parts such as propellers, axles, housings and blocks. By oxidizing in a controlled manner instead of the structural components, the anode preserves the metallic integrity of the assembly and prevents irreparable damage caused by the electrochemical action of salt or brackish water. Proper installation on Caterpillar 2280 Series engines ensures that the cathodic protection circuits operate according to the manufacturer's specifications.
When to replace this part?
Anodes should be inspected at least at the beginning and end of each boating season, and replaced when they have lost approximately half their mass, since below that level their protective capacity decreases drastically. A clear sign that the anode is depleted or missing is the appearance of pitting, surface corrosion or accelerated erosion on adjacent metal parts of the engine or transmission. It is recommended to replace the anode preventively at each annual tune-up: it is a minimal investment compared to the cost of repairing or replacing metal components damaged by galvanic corrosion.
