COMPLETE CATERPILLAR ANODE
Description
Function and technical context
Sacrificial anodes are the main cathodic protection mechanism in marine engines and transmissions: they corrode in a controlled manner before the engine's highest value metal parts, preventing galvanic oxidation in hulls, axles, propellers and aluminum or steel components. This complete anode for Caterpillar engines is designed to protect the most vulnerable areas of the propulsion and cooling system against electrochemical corrosion caused by the action of salt or brackish water. Without anodic protection in good condition, the structural components of the engine and transmission are exposed to accelerated deterioration that can lead to serious breakdowns and costly out-of-port repairs.
When to replace this part?
The clearest symptom that the anode has exhausted its useful life is the visible reduction in its mass: when the anode has lost approximately half of its volume, it must be replaced immediately, since it loses protective effectiveness exponentially from that point on. The inspection and replacement of the anodes must be carried out at least once per nautical season, or every time the boat leaves the water for docking or maintenance; In waters with high conductivity or in boats with greater electrical activity on board, it is recommended to check every six months. Replacing the anode preventively is the most economical measure to avoid corrosion of structural components of the Caterpillar engine, the repair of which can multiply the maintenance cost.
