CATERPILLAR ANODE W/PLUG
Description
Function and technical context
Sacrificial anodes are essential elements in the cathodic protection of marine engines and their submerged metallic components. This anode with plug for Caterpillar engines acts as a sacrificial electrode, attracting galvanic corrosion to itself and thus protecting the noble metal parts of the engine - such as the block, the heat exchanger or the exhaust manifold - against the electrochemical attack of salt or brackish water. By preferentially consuming this component, corrosion of more expensive and difficult-to-access structural parts is avoided. The capped version greatly facilitates installation in threaded motor cavities, ensuring a secure fit and optimal electrical contact for effective protection.
When to replace this part?
Sacrificial anodes must be inspected at least once a season and replaced when they have lost approximately 50% of their mass, since below that threshold the cathodic protection is insufficient. An excessively consumed anode manifests itself indirectly: the appearance of pitting or visible corrosion on metal surfaces of the engine that were previously protected, which indicates that the anode has stopped fulfilling its function. Preventive replacement is recommended at the beginning of each nautical season, especially in navigation areas with high electrical conductivity of water, to avoid irreversible damage to high-cost internal engine components.
