Description

Function and technical context

This zinc anode with a 1/14" threaded cap is designed specifically for Caterpillar marine engines and equipment with reference 6L3104, acting as a galvanic sacrifice in the seawater cooling system. Its function is to concentrate in itself the electrolytic corrosion process that, if not present, would directly attack the metal components of the engine block, casing or heat exchanger. When installed by thread in the drain points or plugs of the water circuit, the Anode protects internal cooling passages where contact with salt or brackish water generates galvanic currents. A depleted or missing anode exposes the engine to pitting, blockages and irreversible structural damage to the block's water galleries.

When to replace this part?

Plug anodes should be inspected at the beginning of each season and replaced when they have lost approximately 50% of their mass, have an irregular surface or are completely rounded and smooth, a sign that they no longer offer effective galvanic protection. In Caterpillar engines that operate in salt water or with high conductivity, it is recommended to check every 200-300 hours of navigation or at least once a year, advancing the replacement in areas of high galvanic aggressiveness. Changing the anode preventively at each seasonal tune-up is the most economical measure to avoid costly repairs due to internal corrosion in the engine block.
