Function and technical context

Sacrificial anodes are essential cathodic protection elements in marine engines and transmissions, designed to prevent galvanic corrosion in metal components submerged in or in contact with salt and brackish water. This capped anode for Caterpillar engines acts as a sacrificial metal: being made of an alloy with a lower electrochemical potential than the aluminum or steel of the engine components, it oxidizes first, protecting critical structural parts. The cathodic protection system is especially relevant in propulsion installations where accelerated corrosion can compromise seals, casings and engine blocks, leading to serious breakdowns and costly out-of-port repairs.

When to replace this part?

Sacrificial anodes must be inspected at the beginning of each nautical season and replaced when they show wear greater than 50% of their mass, are fragmented or have lost their shape. A completely consumed anode leaves the metal components of the motor exposed to galvanic corrosion, which can manifest itself in visible pitting on the aluminum of the housing, deteriorated seals or progressive leaks. Preventive replacement at the beginning of the season, without waiting for total wear, is the practice recommended by naval mechanics workshops to avoid irreversible damage in areas that are difficult to access.
