Function and technical context

This zinc anode with cap for Caterpillar engines is part of the cathodic protection system of the power unit, acting as a sacrificial electrode to protect the metal surfaces of the engine against galvanic corrosion produced by contact with salt or brackish water. The anode is installed directly on the block or at strategic points in the cooling circuit using a threaded cap, guaranteeing effective electrical contact with the metal mass of the engine. Its function is to be consumed in a controlled manner instead of the more expensive engine components, such as the block, heat exchanger or cylinder head, thus avoiding pitting and perforations that would compromise the structural integrity of the engine. Without adequate cathodic protection, galvanic corrosion can progress silently and cause serious breakdowns that are difficult to detect until the damage is irreversible.

When to replace this part?

The anodes must be inspected at the beginning and end of each nautical season; The general rule among naval mechanics is to replace them when they have lost approximately 50% of their mass, without waiting for them to disappear completely, since an excessively consumed anode leaves the metal components of the engine unprotected against electrochemical attack. Symptoms that the cathodic protection is failing include pitting or erosion on the block, cooling fittings, or propeller, as well as whitish or reddish deposits around water contact areas. Replacing the anode preventively during each seasonal maintenance is the most economical measure to avoid major repairs to the engine or even the entry of water on board due to perforation of the internal circuits.
