CATERPILLAR ANODE W/PLUG
Description
Function and technical context
Capped sacrificial anodes are cathodic protection elements designed to preserve the submerged metal surfaces of marine engines against galvanic corrosion, an especially aggressive electrochemical process in salt and brackish water environments. This zinc anode for Caterpillar engines acts as a sacrificial element: being a more active metal, it preferentially corrodes instead of the structural components of the engine, such as blocks, liners, heat exchangers and casings. The incorporation of a screw cap facilitates its installation and direct replacement in the protection points provided by the manufacturer, guaranteeing effective electrical contact with the metal mass of the motor. A deteriorated or missing cathodic protection system exposes the engine to pitting, gasket erosion and irreversible damage to high-cost components.
When to replace this part?
The main indicator of depletion of a sacrificial anode is the reduction of its mass: when the anode has lost approximately 50% of its volume, it must be replaced without delay, since its protection capacity is compromised. The review must be carried out at least at the beginning and end of each navigation season, and always after prolonged periods of mooring in marinas with high galvanic currents. Replacing the anode preventively is the most economical measure to avoid corrosion of internal engine components whose repair can involve much higher costs.
