CATERPILLAR ANODE W/PLUG
Description
Function and technical context
Plugged sacrificial anodes are cathodic protection elements installed directly on metal surfaces of the engine or transmission, such as drain plugs or drain points, where galvanic corrosion acts more aggressively. This specific anode for Caterpillar engines acts as a less noble electrode, attracting corrosion to itself and protecting metal components of greater structural value - blocks, casings, exchangers or collectors - against the electrochemical attack of salt or brackish water. Without effective cathodic protection at these critical points, corrosion can compromise engine tightness, cause cooling water leaks or irreversibly damage the block and cylinder head covers.
When to replace this part?
Sacrificial anodes must be inspected at the beginning and end of each boating season; When the anode has lost between 50% and 75% of its mass, it is essential to replace it before it stops offering real protection. A depleted or completely consumed anode leaves the metal components of the engine exposed to galvanic corrosion, which can lead to pitting, leaks or serious breakdowns that are difficult to repair in water. Replacing the anode preventively at each seasonal inspection is the most economical measure to avoid costly engine repairs or even the replacement of structural parts.
