Function and technical context

Sacrificial anodes are the key component of the cathodic protection system in marine engines and transmissions, acting as a galvanic barrier against electrolytic corrosion that affects submerged metal parts. This anode for Caterpillar engines works in the anti-corrosion protection system, sacrificing itself in a controlled manner to preserve the structural parts of the engine, the block, the transmission and the metal components of the drive assembly. Without adequate cathodic protection, galvanic corrosion attacks critical parts of the marine engine—exchangers, cylinder heads, pump casings—generating costly, irreversible damage. Its correct installation guarantees the integrity of the motor assembly in salt or brackish water environments.

When to replace this part?

A sacrificial anode must be replaced when it has lost between 50% and 70% of its mass, since below that level it no longer offers effective protection against galvanic corrosion. The usual inspection is carried out at the beginning and end of each navigation season, although in waters with high conductivity or in installations with eddy currents a more frequent inspection may be necessary. Replacing the anode preventively at each beaching is the practice recommended by any specialized nautical workshop: the cost of the anode is minimal compared to repairing a corroded block or exchanger.
