Function and technical context

Sacrificial anodes are the elements responsible for galvanic protection of the engine and the submerged metal components of the boat. Manufactured with an alloy with greater electrochemical activity than the metals they protect, they attract electrolytic corrosion to themselves, preventing it from attacking critical parts such as the engine block, the transmission shaft or the heat exchangers. In Caterpillar engines installed in salt or brackish water environments, galvanic degradation can progress silently and destructively, compromising the structural integrity of high-cost components if adequate cathodic protection is not available. This anode, identified with the reference TEN02025 and compatible with the Caterpillar reference 6L2284, is designed to be integrated into the protection points established by the manufacturer, guaranteeing effective coverage throughout the navigation season.

When to replace this part?

The clearest sign that an anode needs to be replaced is the loss of more than 50% of its mass: when the anode appears severely reduced, cracked or completely consumed, it has stopped offering real protection. It is recommended to inspect the anodes at each mooring or, at least, once a season, since their useful life depends directly on the aggressiveness of the aquatic environment, the parasitic currents present in the mooring and the hours of use of the engine. Replacing the anode preventively at the beginning of each season is common practice among professional marine mechanics, and represents a minimal investment compared to the cost of repairing galvanic corrosion on internal engine components.
