Description

Function and technical context

Sacrificial anodes are essential elements in the anti-corrosion protection of marine engines and metal components submerged or in contact with water. This anode for Caterpillar engines acts through the principle of cathodic protection: being a more electronegative metal than the steel or aluminum alloy of the engine, it corrodes in a controlled manner instead of the structural components of the drive unit. Works directly on exposed areas of the engine block, propeller, shaft and other metal parts in contact with salt, fresh or mixed water. Without adequate anodic protection, galvanic corrosion can degrade critical engine parts in a matter of months, causing irreparable damage to liners, coolant plugs and crankcase structures.

When to replace this part?

The most obvious symptom that the anode has exhausted its useful life is a visible reduction in its mass: when it has lost approximately half its volume, it must be replaced immediately to ensure continued protection of the motor. It is recommended to inspect the anodes at least once a season or every 200 hours of navigation, adapting the frequency according to the type of water (sea salt accelerates wear considerably). Replacing the anode preventively at the beginning of each season is the safest practice to avoid costly repairs to structural components of the Caterpillar engine.
