Function and technical context

Sacrificial anodes are the fundamental pillar of cathodic protection in Caterpillar marine engines and propulsion equipment: they corrode in a controlled manner to preserve the noble metal parts of the engine, such as the block, transmission case and underbody components. This anode acts as a negative electrode in the galvanic pair that is formed when dissimilar metals are immersed in salt, brackish or even fresh water, attracting all the corrosive electrochemical activity to itself. Without an anode in proper working order, galvanic corrosion migrates to structural components of the engine or shaft, causing irreversible damage that can render the boat unusable and generate very high-cost repairs.

When to replace this part?

The clearest sign that the TEN02020 anode has reached its useful life is the reduction in its mass by more than 50%: when the anode appears visibly worn, fragmented or with its surface smooth and shiny instead of porous and matte, it has stopped protecting effectively. It is recommended to inspect the anodes at least once per nautical season - or every 200 hours of navigation in highly conductive salt waters - and replace them preventively before their wear exceeds that threshold; Replacing the anode while stranded is infinitely cheaper than repairing a corroded engine block or shaft in the water.
