Function and technical context

Sacrificial anodes are cathodic protection elements whose mission is to prevent galvanic corrosion in the submerged metal parts of the boat and its propulsion system. In the case of the Castoldi M10 anode, this component acts specifically on the Castoldi turbine propulsion systems, protecting them from the electrochemical degradation caused by salt, brackish or fresh water in contact with metals of different nature. As the anode is the most active metal in the galvanic circuit, it preferentially corrodes valuable structural components such as the turbine body, impeller or shaft, preserving its mechanical integrity. Without adequate cathodic protection, corrosion can puncture casings, weaken shafts and seriously compromise the watertightness and performance of the propulsion system.

When to replace this part?

The clearest sign that the Castoldi M10 anode needs to be replaced is the loss of more than 50% of its mass: when the anode appears visibly reduced, deformed or consumed during the hull inspection, the cathodic protection is no longer effective and the surrounding metals begin to suffer active corrosion. It is recommended to check the condition of all the anodes at each beaching or at least once per nautical season, and replace them preventively when their wear exceeds that threshold, regardless of the time elapsed. Replacing the anode before it is completely depleted is the most economical measure to avoid irreversible damage to the Castoldi turbine components, which are considerably more expensive to repair or replace.
