Function and technical context

This sacrificial anode with plug is designed to protect the metal components of the Bukh marine diesel engine from galvanic corrosion, one of the main enemies of propellants in salt and brackish water environments. Made of zinc, it acts as a negative electrode in the electrochemical reaction, being consumed in a controlled manner to preserve more valuable parts such as the block, the cylinder head and the internal cooling circuits. The integrated cap facilitates its direct installation at the engine protection point, ensuring optimal electrical contact with the metal mass of the propeller. Without correct cathodic protection, galvanic attack can compromise the tightness of the engine block and irreversibly damage cooling water pipes.

When to replace this part?

Sacrificial anodes must be inspected at the beginning of each nautical season and replaced when they have lost approximately 50% of their mass, since below that volume their protective capacity decreases significantly. A clear sign that the anode has exhausted its useful life is the appearance of pitting or oxidation marks on adjacent metal surfaces of the motor, indicating that cathodic protection has ceased. Preventive replacement is recommended at each annual engine tune-up, especially on boats that sail in waters with high electrical conductivity or that remain in the water for long periods.
