Function and technical context

The scoop strainer is the component responsible for capturing water from the sea or lake through the hull and directing it to the raw water cooling circuit of the boat. Its spoon-shaped geometry oriented towards the forward current allows efficient intake even at low engine revolutions, guaranteeing a constant flow to the heat exchanger, seawater pump or propulsion motor. Made of brass, it offers superior resistance to marine corrosion and long life in both saltwater and freshwater installations. A damaged, clogged intake body or with a deformed grille can drastically reduce the flow of water to the cooling circuit, causing engine overheating with the consequent risk of serious damage to the cylinder head, impellers and gaskets.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms that indicate that the water intake grille needs to be checked or replaced are: high temperature alarm on the engine panel, insufficient water flow in the exhaust (the jet of cooling water through the exhaust pipe becomes intermittent or disappears), and visible corrosion, cracks or deformation of the grille or brass body. It is recommended to visually inspect the spoon at each beaching or seasonal maintenance, checking that the grate is not clogged by algae, barnacles or other marine debris, and that the brass does not show signs of dezincification or pitting. Replacing this part preventively if there is any sign of deterioration prevents serious breakdowns at sea related to engine overheating.
