Function and technical context

The 30 micron Racor filtration element acts as a separation barrier in the fuel feeding system, intercepting suspended solid particles, emulsified water and sediments present in the diesel before they reach the injection pump and injectors. It works integrated into the Racor prefilter assembly, located between the fuel tank and the feed pump of the marine diesel engine, constituting the first line of defense of the injection train. The presence of unfiltered contaminants in the fuel circuit causes premature wear of the precision elements of the injection system, power losses, irregular starts and even serious breakdowns in the high pressure pump. Keeping this element in correct condition is, therefore, a measure directly linked to the reliability and useful life of the engine under navigation conditions.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms that indicate that the Racor element must be replaced are: progressive loss of power without apparent cause in the engine, difficulty starting when cold, fuel supply pressure below the normal range or visible accumulation of sediment and water in the pre-filter cup. As a general preventive maintenance guideline, it is recommended to replace the filter element every 250-500 hours of operation or at the beginning of each navigation season, especially if the fuel used is of variable quality or the tank has not been used for some time. Performing the change preventively avoids engine outages while sailing and protects the injection components from high-cost repairs.
