COMPRESIOMETER
Description
Function and technical context
The compression meter is an essential diagnostic instrument for evaluating the internal condition of the cylinders of an outboard engine, measuring the compression pressure generated during the combustion cycle. It acts directly on the distribution and combustion system, allowing wear in segments, valves, cylinder head gaskets or cylinder walls to be detected without having to disassemble the engine. A correct compression measurement ensures that the engine develops its full rated power and maintains efficient fuel consumption; If the values differ significantly between cylinders or are below the recommended threshold, it indicates loss of internal tightness that compromises the overall performance of the boat. Having a suitable compression meter in the workshop or on board allows accurate diagnoses to be made before undertaking costly repairs, guiding the mechanic towards the real cause of the problem.
When to use or review this instrument?
It is recommended to perform a compression test whenever the engine has difficult starting, notable loss of power, excessive fuel consumption, bluish or white smoke emission from the exhaust, or irregular vibrations at idle. It is also advisable to include compression measurement as part of seasonal maintenance, especially after long periods of winter storage, to verify that the engine is in optimal condition before starting up. Carrying out this diagnosis preventively avoids serious breakdowns at sea and allows repairs to be planned on land with controlled time and cost.
