Function and Technical Context

The capacitor is an essential component of the breaker point ignition system in two-stroke outboard engines, acting as a protector of the breaker contacts by absorbing the high voltage current at the moment of opening. It works in the primary ignition circuit together with the breaker points and ignition coil, storing and discharging electrical energy to ensure a clean and precise spark at the spark plug. When the capacitor fails or degrades, the points suffer electrical arcing that rapidly erodes them, causing hard starting, intermittent ignition failures, loss of power and, in advanced cases, complete engine starting failure. This replacement part is compatible with Mercury/Mariner/MerCruiser references 802357 and OMC references 0581419 and 581419, covering a wide range of Johnson and Evinrude engines.

When to Replace This Part?

The most common symptoms of a faulty capacitor are visible pitting or burning of the breaker contacts, irregular ignition or below certain RPM, cold starting difficulty and hesitation during navigation. It is recommended to replace the capacitor whenever work is performed on the breaker points or ignition timing system, as both components work together and have similar service life. Replacing it preventively during seasonal maintenance avoids unexpected breakdowns on the water and extends the service life of the points.
