SUZUKI CONNECTING ROD 12161-93902
Description
Function and technical context
The connecting rod is one of the most requested components of the engine group: it transmits the combustion force from the piston to the crankshaft, converting the reciprocating movement into rotary and generating the torque that moves the propeller. It works in the heart of the cylinder block, subjected to cyclical tensile, compression and bending loads and at high temperatures. In two-stroke outboard engines such as the Suzuki DT9.9 and DT15, a connecting rod in poor condition directly compromises the integrity of the piston-crankshaft assembly: if it fails, severe seizure or even breakage of the block can occur, with very high-cost repairs.
When to replace this part?
The most common symptoms of a worn or damaged connecting rod are deep metallic knocking ("crank knock"), noticeable loss of compression, abnormal vibrations at idle and, in advanced cases, bluish smoke due to excess play in the big end or end. In engines that are used intensively or that have suffered from overheating, lack of lubrication or fuel contamination, it is advisable to inspect the connecting rod during each major inspection or when the piston is disassembled. Replacing it preventively at the slightest sign of wear avoids catastrophic breakdowns at sea that involve towing the boat and completely rebuilding the engine.
