Function and technical context

The ignition coil is the central component of the ignition system in outboard engines: its mission is to transform the voltage of the battery or the magnetic flywheel into the high voltage necessary to generate the spark in the spark plugs and produce combustion. It works in the engine's electronic ignition system, acting as an energy transformer in each explosion cycle. A bad internal winding or a coil with current leakage causes intermittent misfires, noticeable loss of power, jerky acceleration or the inability to start the engine. As it is a part subjected to heat, vibrations and marine humidity on a continuous basis, its degradation can go unnoticed until the engine stops working in a navigation situation.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms of a defective ignition coil are: random spark failures (the engine "floods" or loses cylinders), difficult starting when cold or hot, irregular acceleration and sudden engine cuts that recover on their own. There is no fixed replacement interval, but it is advisable to check its condition during each seasonal maintenance, especially in engines with more than ten years of use or that have been stored for long periods. Replacing the coil preventively at the first symptoms avoids being immobilized in the water and possible secondary damage to the CDI module or the spark plugs.
