Description

Function and technical context

The Champion RN4C spark plug is a fundamental component of the ignition system in petrol engines for boats, responsible for generating the electrical spark that ignites the air-fuel mixture inside the combustion chamber. Its correct operation directly determines the efficiency of the ignition cycle: a spark plug in poor condition causes misfires, incomplete combustion and a notable loss of power in the outboard or inboard engine. The quality of the electrode and ceramic insulator of this type of spark plugs is critical to guarantee a consistent spark even in high humidity and temperature conditions typical of the marine environment, where the demands on the ignition system are considerably greater than in land applications.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms of a worn or failed spark plug in a marine engine include difficult or multiple-start starting, rough or unstable idling, jerking and loss of response when accelerating, and in advanced cases, excessive engine vibration due to cylinders that do not fire properly. It is recommended to check and inspect the spark plugs during each seasonal maintenance and replace them preventively every 100 hours of use or once a year, following the engine manufacturer's instructions. Replacing spark plugs preventively is one of the most economical interventions in nautical maintenance and avoids being stranded due to a misfire at sea.
