Description

Function and technical context

The Champion RL82C spark plug is part of the ignition system of the petrol marine engine and its mission is to generate the electrical spark that ignites the air-fuel mixture at the precise moment of the combustion cycle. Properly timed ignition ensures that fuel energy is used to the maximum, keeping propulsion power and consumption within the engine design parameters. When the spark plug is worn or dirty, the spark becomes irregular or disappears completely, causing misfires, jerky acceleration and a noticeable increase in petrol consumption. Its construction is designed to resist humidity, salt and thermal variations typical of the marine environment, factors that accelerate deterioration in inferior quality spark plugs.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms of a damaged marine spark plug are difficult starting when cold, vibrations or "jerks" at idle, loss of response during acceleration and a visible increase in fuel consumption. In petrol marine engines, it is recommended to inspect the spark plugs at each seasonal inspection and replace them as a preventive measure every 100 hours of navigation or once a year, whichever comes first. Changing the spark plug before it fails prevents running out of propulsion at sea and protects the ignition coil and catalyst from damage resulting from incomplete combustion.
