CHAMPION RC9YC SPARK PLUG
Description
Function and technical context
The Champion RC9YC spark plug is the component of the ignition system responsible for generating the electric spark that initiates the combustion of the air and petrol mixture in the chamber of each cylinder of the outboard engine. Its thermal gauge is selected to optimally dissipate heat in two- and four-stroke cycle engines, keeping the center electrode within the temperature range necessary for a clean, consistent spark. When the electrode erodes or accumulates carbon deposits, the spark becomes weak or irregular, compromising complete combustion and degrading the overall performance of the propellant. The direct result is increased fuel consumption, higher emissions of unburned hydrocarbons and a reduction in available propeller shaft power.
When to replace this part?
The clearest signs of a bad spark plug in an outboard are difficult cold starts, "misses" or jerks at cruising speed, unstable idle, and the engine's inability to reach its usual maximum revolutions. In two-stroke engines it is advisable to inspect and renew the spark plugs every 100 hours of navigation, while in four-stroke engines the interval is extended to 200 hours or the period indicated in the engine manual; In any case, it is advisable to review them at each season tune-up. Getting ahead of the failure by replacing the spark plug preventively is the most economical maintenance intervention and has the greatest impact on the reliability of the engine outside of port.
