CHAMPION RC9MC4 SPARK PLUG
Description
Function and technical context
The Champion RC9MC4 spark plug is part of the ignition system of petrol outboard engines, being the component responsible for generating the electrical spark that ignites the air-fuel mixture in the combustion chamber. Its correct operation directly determines the efficiency of the ignition cycle: a spark plug in poor condition causes misfires, incomplete combustion and a notable loss of power in 150 hp engines. The electrode and insulator of this spark plug are designed to withstand the demanding thermal and mechanical conditions of high displacement engines in a marine environment, where humidity, salt and long duty cycles accelerate wear. If the spark plug fails or has deposits, the engine may experience difficult starting, rough running, or excessive fuel consumption.
When to replace this part?
The most common symptoms of a worn spark plug in an outboard engine include jerking or misfire at mid-throttle, difficulty starting when cold, unstable idling, and higher fuel consumption than usual. As a general maintenance rule, spark plugs on heavy-duty outboard engines should be checked seasonally and replaced approximately every 100 hours of boating, or sooner if carbon deposits, eroded electrodes, or cracks in the insulator are detected. Changing the spark plugs preventively at the beginning of each season is a practice recommended by any naval mechanic: the cost of the part is minimal compared to an ignition failure at sea.
