Description

Function and technical context

The Champion P8Y spark plug is part of the outboard engine's ignition system, being responsible for generating the electrical spark that ignites the fuel and air mixture in the combustion chamber. Designed for 15 hp OHC engines, it works in sync with the ignition coil and electronic module to ensure precise ignition in each engine cycle. Its correct thermal calibration is decisive in the marine environment, where variations in humidity, salt water and different rpm regimes require an ignition component with high corrosion resistance and electrical stability. If the spark plug fails or degrades, the engine may experience loss of power, poor starting, or incomplete combustion, compromising both the performance and safety of the boat.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms of a damaged spark plug in an outboard are difficult starting when cold, intermittence or "jerks" at half acceleration, high fuel consumption and the presence of black smoke from the exhaust due to incomplete combustion. For outboard engines in marine use, it is recommended to check and inspect the spark plugs at each seasonal maintenance and replace them at the interval indicated by the manufacturer, generally every 100 hours of operation or at the beginning of each season if use is intensive. Changing the spark plugs preventively is one of the most economical interventions to avoid breakdowns during navigation, especially in engines that operate regularly in salt water.
