CHAMPION N4C SPARK PLUG
Description
Function and technical context
The Champion N4C spark plug is the component responsible for generating the electrical spark that ignites the air-fuel mixture inside the combustion chamber of the outboard engine. It works in the ignition system, acting as the end point of the high voltage cycle that starts from the coil and ignition module. A bad spark plug causes incomplete or irregular combustion, which directly translates into loss of power, poor starts, excessive fuel consumption and increased exhaust pollution. In outboard engines, where working conditions are especially demanding due to humidity, load changes and frequent acceleration cycles, keeping the spark plugs in perfect condition is essential to guarantee the performance and reliability of the propulsion assembly.
When to replace this part?
The most common symptoms of a worn or faulty spark plug on an outboard engine include difficulty starting when cold, jerky or hesitant acceleration, rough idling, and a noticeable increase in fuel consumption. It is recommended to check and inspect the spark plugs during each seasonal maintenance and replace them every 100 hours of use or at least once a year, depending on operating conditions. Changing the spark plug preventively is one of the lowest cost interventions in nautical maintenance and avoids more serious breakdowns in the ignition system that can leave the boat without propulsion on the high seas.
