CHAMPION J8C SPARK PLUG
Description
Function and technical context
The spark plug is the element responsible for generating the electrical spark that ignites the air-fuel mixture inside the combustion chamber of a two- or four-stroke engine. It works in the ignition system of the outboard engine, acting in sync with the ignition coil and CDI module to ensure complete combustion in each cycle. A bad spark plug causes poor combustion, which results in loss of power, increased fuel consumption and difficulty starting the engine, especially when cold. The Champion J8C (ref. CHAJ8C) is designed for outboard engines that require this specific thermal gauge, ensuring a consistent and reliable spark under the typical working conditions of motor boating.
When to replace this part?
The most common symptoms of a worn or faulty spark plug in an outboard include jerking or cutting at mid-speed, difficult cold starting, unstable idle, and abnormal engine vibrations. As a general rule, it is recommended to inspect the spark plugs at each seasonal maintenance and replace them every 100 hours of boating or once a year, whichever comes first. Changing the spark plugs preventively is one of the most economical interventions in nautical maintenance and prevents breakdowns in the water that can be costly or compromise the safety of the boat.
