The ignition black box (CDI module) is the electronic component responsible for managing and timing high-voltage discharges to the ignition coils, ensuring that each cylinder receives the spark at the exact moment of the combustion cycle. It operates within the capacitive discharge ignition (CDI) system of the outboard motor, receiving signals from the magnetic flywheel and processing them to precisely control ignition advance based on engine speed. A defective ignition module can cause intermittent spark failure, difficult starting, severe loss of power or sudden engine shutdown during navigation. This component is compatible with Johnson and Evinrude motors, as well as Mercury/Mariner/MerCruiser references 878885 and OMC references 0582452, 582452, 582453 and 583380.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms of CDI module failure are the engine starting but stopping without apparent reason, hesitation or loss of power at certain rpms, cylinders that do not fire consistently and difficulty starting especially in cold conditions. Since it is an electronic component with no moving parts, there is no fixed hour replacement interval, although it is advisable to inspect it at each seasonal service by checking connectors and looking for signs of corrosion or moisture damage. Replacing the CDI module at the first signs of intermittent failure prevents being stranded in open water and prevents secondary damage to coils and stators.
