Description

Function and technical context

The thru-hull with naval bronze grille is the component that passes through the hull of the boat to allow the intake of sea water to the cooling system or to other internal circuits that require external water. The integrated grate acts as the first physical filter, preventing debris, algae, mollusks or foreign bodies from entering the pipes and damaging the water pump, heat exchanger or impeller. Being made of naval bronze, it offers superior resistance to marine corrosion in both saltwater and freshwater, guaranteeing watertightness and durability in demanding conditions. A water intake in poor condition can compromise the entire cooling system, causing engine overheating and unexpected stops while navigating. With a diameter of 4 inches, this thru-hull is sized for significant flows, being common in installations of medium and high power inboard engines.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms of deterioration in a through-hull with a grid are the appearance of verdigris or biological incrustations that reduce the passage of water, visible deformations or pits in the bronze due to galvanic corrosion, water loss around the bushing or difficulty in completely closing the associated seacock. It is recommended to visually inspect the thru-hull and its grille at each docking or seasonal maintenance, cleaning the slots in the grille and checking that the seal with the hull is still perfect. Replacing the thru-hull preventively in the event of any sign of advanced corrosion or deformation prevents water leaks into the interior of the hull, one of the most dangerous and costly breakdowns that a boat can suffer.
