Description

Function and technical context

The thru-hull is the element that passes through the hull of the boat to allow the passage of fluids between the interior and exterior, whether for the intake of engine cooling water, bilge emptying, the wet exhaust circuit or any other system that requires communication with the sea. This 1 1/4" unit is manufactured from fiberglass reinforced plastic (66-30%), a material that combines structural rigidity and resistance to marine corrosion, especially in saltwater environments where conventional metals degrade quickly. The exterior trim, stamped in AISI 316 stainless steel, guarantees a watertight and durable finish in the contact area with the helmet. Correct installation is critical: a defective, poorly tightened or deteriorated thru-hull can cause uncontrolled entry of water that compromises the buoyancy of the boat.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms of a thru-hull in poor condition are: visible leaks around the hull in the installation area, deformations or cracks in the plastic body caused by impacts or stresses in the laminate, and corrosion or deterioration of the stainless steel trim indicating that the perimeter seal is no longer reliable. It is recommended to inspect all thru-hulls at each docking or seasonal maintenance, checking the condition of the plastic, the tightness of the seal and the tightness of the internal locknut. Preventively replacing a damaged thru-hull is one of the most economical passive safety measures available on board, since avoiding a water leak during navigation can make the difference between a minor breakdown and a serious emergency.
