Function and technical context
The thru-hull with spigot is a hydraulic coupling element that allows connecting hoses from the seawater cooling circuit to the hull of the boat, guaranteeing the tightness of the passage between the inside and outside of the hull. Made of white plastic with high resistance to marine corrosion, with a 5/8" thread and a 16 mm outlet, it is usually installed in the water intake, bilge evacuation or cooling circuits of inboard and inboard-stern marine engines. Its correct installation and conservation is critical: a damaged or poorly sealed thru-hull can cause uncontrolled entry of water into the hull, with the risk of partial or total flooding of the engine compartment.
When to replace this part?
The most common symptoms of a damaged thru-hull include persistent moisture around the installation point, continuous dripping in the bilge with no apparent cause, or difficulty closing the associated bottom cock. As it is a plastic component permanently exposed to seawater and pressure cycles, it is recommended to inspect it at each docking or seasonal maintenance, checking the condition of the thread, the spigot and the sealing with nautical putty. Preventive replacement in the event of any sign of microcracks or loss of watertightness is especially important, since a failure during navigation can lead to a serious breakdown that is difficult to solve outside the port.
