Description

Function and technical context

The 3/4" brass thru-hull is a hull accessory that allows the watertight passage of pipes through the hull of the boat, guaranteeing communication between the interior of the boat and the outside water without compromising the structural integrity or watertightness of the hull. Its application covers bilge systems, cockpit drains, bilge emptying and seawater intakes, being a critical element in any nautical hydraulic installation. The naval brass alloy provides excellent corrosion resistance in saline marine environments, combining mechanical robustness with compatibility with copper and bronze installations. A thru-hull in poor condition or incorrectly installed represents a direct risk of water entering the hull, with potentially serious consequences for the safety of the vessel.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms that indicate the need to replace a thru-hull are the appearance of humidity or dripping around the fitting, visible corrosion or verdigris in the area where it fits with the hull, difficulty in maneuvering the associated stopcock or microcracks in the body of the accessory detectable in the in-depth inspection. It is recommended to visually inspect all thru-hulls at each annual docking or at each seasonal maintenance, verifying the tightness, the state of the sealing and the absence of galvanic pitting. Preventively replacing any thru-hull that shows signs of degradation prevents flooding during navigation, a breakdown that can be unaffordable both in terms of cost and safety.
