Function and technical context

The 1 1/4" brass thru-hull is a structural nautical plumbing accessory that allows the passage of pipes or hoses through the hull of the boat, guaranteeing the watertightness of the hull. It works in bilge systems, deck drainage (scupper), seawater cooling or gray water evacuation, depending on the installation. Being made of brass, it offers superior resistance to corrosion in marine environments compared to ferrous materials, being suitable for both fiber and wooden hulls. When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms of a thru-hull in poor condition are: persistent humidity or dripping on the bulkhead or bilge close to the installation, difficulty in operating the associated seacock, presence of verdigris or greenish corrosion characteristic of degraded brass, and deformation or cracking of the body of the piece. It is recommended to visually inspect all thru-hulls at each seasonal maintenance, paying special attention to the condition of the thread, sealing joints and the contact area with the hull. Preventively replacing any thru-hull with signs of corrosion or mechanical play is the most effective measure to avoid a water leak during navigation, an emergency that can be critical on the high seas.
