Description

Function and technical context

The double brass plug measuring 3/4" is a nautical plumbing accessory designed to join two sections of pipe or hose using a male-male threaded connection at both ends. Its main function is to act as an extension nipple or coupling element in cooling circuits, fuel systems, seawater circuits or sanitary installations on board. Brass is the reference material for this type of fittings in marine environments thanks to its excellent resistance to corrosion in humid and saline environments, as well as its durability against the vibrations of a running marine engine. A plug in poor condition can cause leaks in the circuit in which it is integrated, with consequences ranging from the loss of coolant to the entry of uncontrolled water into critical areas of the engine or hull.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms that indicate that a double coupling must be replaced are the appearance of rust or scum stains around the thread, persistent humidity in the connection area, or a visible leak, even if it is minimal, since in pressure circuits any leak will tend to worsen with use. It is recommended to visually inspect all threaded fittings and nipples during each seasonal maintenance, paying special attention to the condition of the threads and possible cracks in the brass body caused by excessive tightening or impacts. Preventively replacing a damaged core has a minimal cost compared to a breakdown due to a leak while sailing, where emergency repair can be considerably more expensive and compromise the safety of the boat.
