Description

Function and technical context

This double male fiberglass reinforced plastic plug acts as a connection nipple in seawater cooling circuits, bilge systems, wet exhaust pipes or any onboard piping installation that requires joining two hoses of equal diameter in a straight line. Its 1-inch pitch makes it a common element in mid-section circuits where the circulation of fluids—cooling water, ballast water or coolant mixture—must be maintained without restrictions. The fiberglass-reinforced plastic manufacturing guarantees resistance to marine corrosion, hydrocarbons present in the direction and thermal variations typical of the engine environment, surpassing in durability the standard plastic blocks without reinforcement. A deteriorated, cracked or leaking nipple causes loss of flow in the cooling circuit, entry of air into the line or, in the worst case, flooding of compartments, with the consequences of engine overheating or structural damage that this entails.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms that indicate that a connection nipple needs to be replaced are: the appearance of moisture or visible dripping at the hose joints, whitish marks of lime or salt deposits around the nipple, superficial microcracks detectable when visually inspecting the part, or unexplained loss of pressure in the corresponding hydraulic circuit. It is recommended that all plastic nipples and fittings be inspected at each seasonal maintenance, especially after a prolonged period of inactivity when temperature changes can crack the material. Preventively replacing this low-cost component during the annual tune-up avoids navigational breakdowns that would be considerably more expensive to resolve outside the port.
