Description

Function and technical context

Chrome-plated brass ball valves are essential shut-off components in boat hydraulic, cooling and fuel systems, allowing fluid flow to be interrupted or restored with a 90° turn of the handle. The combination of a chromed brass body with a stainless steel ball guarantees superior resistance to marine corrosion and the deposit of limescale, critical factors in saltwater environments. The Teflon (PTFE) gasket that seals the ball ensures long-lasting tightness even after repeated opening and closing cycles, minimizing the risk of leaks that could compromise the safety of the boat. Its 3/4" thread makes it compatible with standard pipes for multiple onboard systems, from bottom intakes and seawater cooling circuits to bilge or fuel pipes.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms of deterioration in a nautical ball valve are difficulty turning the handle, visible leaks in the body or in the connection thread, and continuous dripping even with the valve in the closed position, an unequivocal sign that the Teflon gasket or the ball has lost integrity. It is recommended to inspect all onboard shut-off valves at each seasonal maintenance, checking the free movement of the handle, the absence of galvanic corrosion and tightness under pressure. Replacing a ball valve in poor condition preventively, before launching the boat, avoids unexpected breakdowns that during navigation can lead to water ingress or loss of control of the affected circuit.
