Description

Function and technical context

This 2 1/2" chrome-plated brass ball valve is an essential hydraulic shut-off element in marine plumbing installations, seawater cooling systems and shipboard filling or emptying circuits. Its main function is to interrupt or allow the passage of fluid quickly and tightly through a quarter turn, which makes it a reliable solution for flow control in large diameter pipes. The inner ball made of stainless steel guarantees corrosion resistance in aggressive marine environments, while the Teflon (PTFE) gaskets ensure watertightness under continuous working conditions. The stainless steel handle offers safe and durable performance even in environments with high humidity and saline exposure. A defective seal or a damaged valve can cause uncontrolled entry of seawater on board, with direct risk to the safety of the vessel.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms of deterioration in a naval ball valve include visible leaks in the body or ball shaft, difficulty turning the handle, loss of tightness when closing or presence of verdigris and corrosion in the brass body that compromises its structural integrity. It is recommended that all onboard shut-off valves be visually inspected at the beginning of each nautical season and after any prolonged stranding, paying particular attention to those located below the waterline. Preventively replacing a valve in poor condition before launching avoids critical breakdowns in navigation and emergency repairs at a much higher cost.
