Description

Function and technical context

The plate anode for BMW marine engine is a cathodic protection element that works in the anti-corrosion system of the propulsion unit. Its function is to act as a sacrificial metal, that is, it oxidizes and corrodes in a controlled manner to protect the metal parts of the engine and transmission against the electrochemical attack produced by salt, brackish or water with a high mineral content. Without correct anodic protection, critical components such as the engine block, transmission housing or aluminum and zinc accessories are exposed to galvanic corrosion that can cause irreversible structural damage and costly breakdowns. The reference TEN01003 is specifically designed in plate format to adapt to the geometry of the BMW marine engine, guaranteeing adequate electrical contact and sacrificial surface for effective protection throughout the boating season.

When to replace this part?

Sacrificial anodes should be inspected at least once a season and replaced when they have lost between 30% and 50% of their mass, or when they have an irregular, cracked surface or limescale deposits that reduce their protective effectiveness. If incipient corrosion is observed on aluminum or zinc parts of the engine, it is a clear sign that the anode is exhausted and no longer fulfills its function. Preventive replacement is recommended at the beginning of each season, since the cost of this component is minimal compared to repairing an engine block or transmission affected by galvanic corrosion.
